On being a dog mom

Glory, our sweet good dog, did nothing to prepare us for Laney. The chewing, the biting, the insescent excitability, the peeing, the jumping, the finicky stomach, and the whining. So really its like we have a puppy and a really irritated teenage cat. Laney has decided that everything within reach must be food. ACORNS! Why didn't y'all feed me acorns earlier! The baseboards. My face. And poor Glory can't walk by without the beast attaching to her legs with those ferocious puppy teeth. We haven't told Laney yet, but Glory asked if there was a return policy. Of course we told her no. But, on many occasion we see Glory stalking her prey in the backyard and then with the speed of a jungle cat (see I told you she was a cat), pummels the puppy from the side and proceeds to attack with sweet bites.

Our peaceful sleepy Brunswick life has now been replaced by early morning chewing, whining, and tail thumping from inside the crate. [Note to reader: old homes have ZERO sound proofing.] And on those early morning strolls through the grass to find the perfect place to pee, Laney has a different agenda. Anything that moves is far more interesting than her mother's persistent plea to "please, be a good girl." And just when I think all my comments about water, and rushing streams, and don't you have to go are working, she flops flat out on her stomach enjoying the belly rubs from those pesky blades of grass. Admitting defeat, I usually trampse back in where she finds a better place to relieve herself. And as for the work from home dog dad, she's kicked him in the butt too. We now know why puppies and babies have to be so cute.

So to all my friends eagerly awaiting the birth of their little ones, I say good luck. Because I can only imagine that the tiredness is 1,000 times worse, and the cuteness is 10,000 times better. What will you do with all that cuteness!?

I hope Laney is not terrorizing your anti-dog, Glory, too much. Remember the good old days when you were excited that you had a dog that was beginning to run and wag her tail? I guess what they say is true, be careful what you wish for. Laney's still cute, though.
